I have a customer with a 15 year old house who cannot keep paint on her
redwood siding — it peels off in sheets, sometimes, down to the bare wood.
Originally, it was primed with a top quality oil-based primer ( but not backprimed).
Any idea what’s going on? (Even the paint recommended by the Sherwin-
Williams “expert” isn’t staying on)

Sand it offand apply a clear oil to leave it natural.
Not sure what kind the expert recommended but redwood haas tannins and resins that make it almost impossible fro most paint to stick. Ben Moore has a formula specifically for redwoods and cedars that I have seen work. You still have to be very careful about prep and re-priming imediately to get a bond. If SW has a good formula but the painter did not prep well, the high quality specialty paint was wasted.
But this could also be a combination problem. If moisture is being forced out thru the walls of the house from having no VB inside, any paint on any siding will display the same symptoms. This usually shows itself worst at kitchen and bath exterior walls, and north facing walls.
Combine interior moisture problems with painted redwood and you have a double whammy, Mammy.
