We’ve installed Spanish Cedar on the exterior/interior of a new addition to our house. Within a year most of the exterior paint (especially sun drenched areas) was crazed or peeling. The wood is coated with oil exterior primer and Sherman williams exterior latex paint (2coats). After my initial analysis, it’s definitly the wood causing the problem.
We need to repaint but I want to properly prep the surface so I don’t have a recurrance of the same issue. Unfortunatly, I feel that I may need to strip off all the existing coating, unless someone has a better idea.
Any thoughts on how to paint this wood/

Most cedars and trropical woods have more extreme tannins and resins that interfere with paint bonding. Special primers are formulated for these woods and for fir. The folks at SW stores should be able to fit you with something that works with your finish paint and your wood.
