I am painting my brothers master bedroom. He has trim that is stained, and they want to save it and repaint it in some semi-gloss color. Will primer alone do the job of locking in the stain so that I can paint right over it, or should I really try and talk him into getting new trim????

Nix,
Prime with Kilz oil. It seems to stain block anything. Stinks!

Kilz works. BIN works faster. Either way, make sure that you get at least two good coats on the wood, give it a light sanding with 200 grit paper then paint. Remember, when it comes to painting it's all in the prep.

those kilz & bins good - like previously mentioned oil or ones you clean w/ ammonia best
not privy to the stain makeup but another worthy step or two would be to hit the surface w/ some MEK or like then light sand then tack w/ MEK or thinner and then prime
you've provided better tooth for that primer and yrs down the road when someone nixes that trim the primer and maybe more will stay rather than the primer and all coats above chipping off
how old is the stain and cover coats..

I think that you will get better and more durable results by priming with Benjamin Moore Fresh Start oil based primer and following with an oil or latex enamel topcoat.
Stan
thank you all very much

Shellac, or any shellac based primer like Kilz. Kilz makes a water based primer also, do not use this. The other Kilz is shellac based.

thanks Mike, that sounds like what I am going to do after some light sanding.
