Had two ladies give us prices for interior painting on our house for two bathrooms and a couple other rooms.
Price was — walls $xxxxx trim $xxxx
We asked them to do the ceilings and expected to pay extra for them since they quoted just the walls ,but then they told us to paint the doors would be extra too !!
Is that a normal way to quote a paint job ?? Or are we getting slightly hosed ??
Thanks all.

Doors are included, closets are not.
The awful thing is that beauty is mysterious as well as terrible. God and the devil are fighting there, and the battlefield is the heart of man.

I always include the room side of the door since doors are usually the same as the trim.
I don't always include window sashes since it's too easy to have too many coats of paint on them. I don't price them separate, but I do ask.
I generally include ceilings since it makes for a much nicer cut line in the corner, but I will leave them out for reasons of economy if a customer asks.
I don't know if you're getting hosed. It depends on the prices. Once I have the trim paint out, I can paint a door pretty quickly so I wouldn't expect it to be much extra... maybe 20 minutes?
wow. they sound like change order specialists.
i would be changing painters. that being said did you notice their first number was considerably less than what you had anticipated. how could they not include the ceilings?
hey, the price of the roof is 15000........ not including the dormers:)
maybe this is SOP in some areas, but not here.
good luck walter
Every day is a gift, that's why it's called the present.
As the painting contractor we should be asking you what you would like included on the initial visit. Closets are always one I ask about as well because it is a pain for some homeowners to clean them out not just to paint.
Ceilings are not necessarily included. In this area plasterers often convince the homeowner to texture the ceiling and tell them they don't need to paint it.
We detail per room when not doing the entire house. We also list all trim components like windows, trim, crown, doors (one side) , casings, built-in cabinetry....etc.
I would get another "detailed" quote.

Maybe you should start pricing your slate that way, Walter. Slate = $$, you want nails with that, flashing, how about some roofing felt?
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Thanks everyone for the help.
I suspected as much. It's live and learn time -- what I thought was just natural turned into an extra.
