When I’m painting windows I go to the Dollar Store and buy a cheap container of underarm deodrant (gel type) and then apply it to the glass next to the wood. I do this rather than masking taping the window or taping paper to the window or trying to use a paint shield, stapling paper or plastic, or whatever.
I can then quickly brush on either paint or primer, it’s okay if the paint gets on the window where I applied the deodrant, and then the next day I can easily scrape the paint off of the window. The deoderant acts kind of like a barrier between the paint and the glass.
This has worked pretty well for me and is the fastest way to paint a window from my experience.

I wonder about contamination of the paint. some of the gel will surely get on the applicator and commingle with the paint. This could affect color, adhesion, and durability.
