So, I built replacement PVC column base #2 over the weekend… this time to the correct height, thank you very much.
So, with a couple bottle jacks, we lifted the portico over the front of this building slightly… enough to find out that the 10 ft tall, 150 y/o column was not going to remain intact while we tried to fit the new base to it. It became apparent that we were going to have to disassemble the column, make some additional repairs to it, and then reassemble it from the bottom up. Problem was, there were only 2 of us, and one of us was gonna have to hold the base sections in place while the column was put back…
The clients seemed to appreciate the entertainment value…

What? It ain't THAT heavy now, my wife (64) and I re-did TWO a few weeks ago..just us and one jack. LOL
I almost plonked her on the head when the old capital came apart ( I was on the ladder and the capital split, I had half in each hand, while she was doing the jacking).
Did both like this, BTW, I temp post it up, bring the columns home and rebuild them..much easier.

A few yrs ago she was my main helper, but has slacked off since her Art and other obligations with Salvation Army have taken over her "retirement".
Even at her age , she's a better helper than a few others that have helped.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Isn't he an Icelander? (pfttttt... wannabe ;) )
I may have a few seconds more sheer grunt time than you, but I'd never try an Ironman. In the words of Clint "A man's gotta know his limitations" ;)

Ah, you just need to find the right event. In the 20's the guys riding the Tour de France smoked during the climbing stages; thought it opened their lungs.

Those old guys were tough. Had to carry all their own gear, fix all their own problems, get their own food and drink, etc. No outside assistance was allowed at all.Favorite story from back then was the guy who broke his fork coming off a feared alpine descent after being clipped by a car. (Mostly unpaved roads back then, too) He hiked 8 1/2 miles to the village at the bottom. Found a forge and made a new steel fork, himself. He was assessed a 10 minute penalty (essentially ending his chance for the win) because he let a boy run the bellows at the forge. Hard core, those fellows. No word whether they had to lift their own columns at the race finish, though ;)'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb
That also did not have dérailleurs! Two gears, one on each side of the back wheel. You stop, flip the wheel around, and that is your second gear.I thought when they had that big anniversary race (100 years I think) and followed (more or less) the original course they should have made them race with original equipment too. Find out who the real men are.Now bikes have 11 cogs in just the rear! I still only have ten gears total.
those are spare tires, the round thing on that guy are his googles ...
