pic of “clever” drop ceiling solution ..

JeffBuck | Posted in Construction Techniques on February 19, 2004 04:35am

At least I think it’s clever.

In a basement … always gotta box out the windows … sometimes it turns out nicer than others …

decided to make a 2x “L” …. shot for a 1/4″ reveal at the drop line … wrapped the whole thing with drywall …. then ran the drywall into the window well.

Was gonna do 2 seperate wells … decided one continuous area looked cleaner.

Tough area to get a good shot of …

Here’s probably too many ….

    Jeff-

Every time I see this basement, it seems to get more and more involved.....lol.  Is this thing turning into a $200,000 job, or what?

    Very nice work, BTW

the home theater is still yet to be decided ... install to happen long after I'm gone ...

all the wiring is in .... just gotta decide on the projector and screen ...

Someday I'll be outta there .....

    Jeff:

Sweeet! How did you get the rounded corners in the drywall?

    Jeff, very clever indeed.

Did you lay out the drop ceiling before putting in the 2x "L"?

      JeffBuck | Feb 19, 2004 07:50am | #6

height of the drop was figured before the L was ripped and installed.

The L was lined up off the opposite bulkhead ... string line kept it straight ... drywall was done on the L before the ceiling ...

then the rest of the drywall work was finished after the drop ceiling was up.

used a 2x6 ripped down a bit for the "perfect" reveal ... first thought was flush ... then reality set in .... figured an even reveal ... what ever it decided to be in the end ... would be nice.

As luck would have it ... thought 1/4" to be ideal ... and 1/4" it is.

I like it .... the homeowner hasn't even noticed the transition yet!

Jeff, have you been to Pei's museum in D.C.?

Slabs of triangular granite floor tiles, all full tiles. How did he do that?

I like the transition alot, classy, usually I see people extend the drop ceiling all the way to the window and terminate it with a small piece of tile sitting vertically as the end piece, your way was infinitely nicer.

I agree with raybrowne...using a small bulkhead to transition the drop ceiling from the window wells looks very nice indeed. I might just have to steal ( er..."borrow") that trick .

Thanks Jeff. Keep the pictures coming.

I did a similar job i a basement the windows were deep into the wall already and then I had to bring the walls out away from the cement foundation. Yours came out very nice I really like the tiles chosen and the rounded cormers as mentioned by someone else.... I'll if anyone interrested I will post some pictures later when I get home.

    Jeff,

Thanks for sharing.  My old drop ceiling prevented the creation of an egress window in the basement and I was going to rip the whole thing out.  Your solution will work better with less work on my part.

Here are those pics of the drop ceiling I did. I moved the ceiling away from the windows about 2' and dropped the sill at an angle for more light to come in becaue the existing ceiling was already low. One picture is farther away but you can get a better view without the darkness from the sunlight. This was a fun job. You wouldn't think this basement used to be a woodshop. Now it's a film processing lab for a small business. Enjoy the pics.
