OK,
Some you want to post pictures. . .
Recently Luka as posted some good information on posting images. A search or e-mail directly to him would also help those in need. That withstanding. . . These are some things to keep in mind.
- File size is very important! Try and keep the files down to 50kb. I have a cable modem, but most use a dail-up connection and their working on an average of about 4.9kbs so give them a brake. If you post pictures that are 500kb you’re killing them. . .
- If you don’t have a place to store your own images on-line then you will have to use the Taunton server. For the same reasons as above try not to kill them either.
- How you get the pictures in to your computer has a lot to do with how big they will be. If you scan, and don’t have image software, set the resolution to 72dpi, since that’s what most screens are no reason to scan at a higher one. Do a test scan and see what the size is in pixels. I’ve found 320 x 240 great for pictures on the web, if you want to go a little bigger then 640 x 480 is about the max. If you can’t adjust the pixels size directly on the scanner then use the “% of image” control to make it smaller. Getting to learn how to use your scanner will greatly help you and others when it comes time to view you pictures.
- If you use a digital camera it will have all the software to manage the pictures when you down load them to your computer. Once again getting to know your software will help you and others when it comes time to view your pictures.
- To be continued. . .

*b WBA At Your ServiceA thoroughly amazing display which serves as a reminder to me that I am but a novice of html. Great job, Joe.
*Joe,Thanks a bunch for the tutorial. I've decided to remove my hex. You should be able to have more children now. ;-)
*Joe, You're so good at this....I think you're in the wrong line of work. Well, maybe not....but think about a nice warm classroom, regular hours, good pay, good looking coeds!
*Joe, I think Taunton removes attachments stored on its server after some time, is that true? Anyhow, if so, I think most people would prefer to use their own storage site. I am/was using Go.com but they are stopping that service, but there are many others. Also, you have to be careful of some sites that require passwords or a login to access the items stored, this will prevent people from viewing the linked image/s.? So, if you don't mind, could I slip a question into your answer? What on-line storage sites, besides Yahoo & Netscape, have others found to work well? I have heard Geocities was a good one, but never used it. I think Yahoo was one that was a pain, but never used it for storage.
*Good Golly Joe, talk about taking them by the hand and walking them through it! Step by step graphics. Impressive. Here's a great tutorial for beginners. I learned a lot from it a while back and gave up on wysiwyg software altogether. There's also tables, frames and forms tutorials. Once everyone gets dry behind the ears they'll learn the joys of authoring for different browsers. Yep, I.E and Netscape recognize things differently and AOL sees them different altogether. Text sizes, tables, Cascading style sheets, and particular html commands such as "blink" and Marquee" are not recognized the same by both. So when building sites, view them through all three major browsers to make sure they look satisfactory and they work. The Marquee tag has been a bit of a thorn in my side as when I invented the Amazing Kissing Machine, Netscape understood the marquee tag. Then it quit. The text scrolling accross the bottom was 90% of the humor. Instead Netscape would just block it all together below mr kisser. Gee that's funny. Internet explorer went from understanding it nicely to barely understanding it by clumping the text together and scrolling it in a yellow band. Yeesh! Yesterday I decided to solve that problem and went searching for a java script widget to scroll my text, found one, so MR Kisser is back to being his funny old self!! (Notice the blinking text in netscape isn't blinking if you look at it through I.E.)Have fun,Dan
*Thank you Joe.I have bookmarked this thread for easy reference. You are a good teacher.Cheers,Peter
*But let's not forget to mention that changing the attributes doesn't change the "size" -- ie, if you've got an image that's 800x600 pixels and is 400k, you can change the attributes to 80x60, but it'll still take forever to load. You need to change the image size in your image editor (photoshop) to make thumbnails. Please folks, DO THIS! Images shouldn't be much bigger than about 40k (max!) and thumbs should be ~10-15k max.In Photoshop, under image (along top tool bar), choose image size, then set the width and height you want. Photoshop also has a save option "save for web" which enables you to optimize size vs appearance.I was at a cabinetmaker's site the other day and the photo on the front page was way over 400k. I waited about four minutes for the first inch or so to load and left disgusted. I wonder if his cabinetry is better than his web site? I'll never knowDan
*so I see...
*Hi again Joe,I tried to copy and paste your instructions, but the graphics do not come through. Any way to do this?Although I have bookmarked this thread, I just wanted backup in case Taunton has a disaster or they decide to shed data to make room for more. Thanks,Peter
*Joe, When I look at Mike Smith's pictures in "works in progress" on the construction tips threads, he says his pictures are about 200kb's. They seem to download reasonably fast. I have a P3 800 processor. Talk to me about this since I just got a dig. camera to use on this site. GW
*Excellent postings Joe,Gabe
*Take this for the free advice that it is, but I just heard that Geocities has been trying to prevent image linking to your site on their servers. Sign of the times it seems, but there are still others, for now.
*Thanks Joe,WOW!! That is quite a sit you have got. Lot of work went into that. Thanks for taking the time to help people like me.Cheers,Peter
*Joe, I just came onto this thread...nice advice. Thanks for taking the time. Graphics manipulation, once done a few times, is so very simple. On too many occasions I've bailed out of a slow loading pic that someone has posted. So, folks...take a gander at Joe's two pics in the previous post...read and heed...smaller IS better!
*Joethanks sooooo much. I will have to go through this info very carefully and absorb it. One thing I dont get is i bookmarks?please forgive my monumental ignorance, but I am getting there, really.
*Thanks Joe. I downloaded one of the image managing programs you found and am learning to use it before I plague the board with more pictures...
*Joe, On post #6 what do you click on to "copy link location" ? thanks for all your help!
