I’ve been asked to install a picture rail in a second floor bedroom of a new home. The ceilings are 8′. I know picture rails usually die into the window trim, but how high should it be above the floor or below the ceiling?

i put them as high as possible, then watch the client hang all sizes with some nearly reaching the ceiling. it gives a wider range of choice.
*SamI assume from your post that you cannot kill the picture molding into the top edge of the window casing. If that is the case. then set at 8" below the ceiling. If this number is over or under the top edge of the window casings then move it up or down that inch or so. Unless the window casings go all the way to the ceiling, or are something like a foot below the ceiling. If you can't make the molding die into the top edge of the window casing at something around 8" then set it at 8" FTDS GREG
*The original picture rails in my place are about 3/8" below the 9 foot ceilings. That's about the highest they should ever go. As to a lower limit, they need to be above the center of gravity of the tallest picture that will be hung from them. Anywhere in between those that looks good will be fine. In this case, ask the clients where they'd like them.-- J.S.
*I installed some picture rail (salvaged from the owner's grandpa's farm house that was torn down-talk abaout pressure to do it right the first time). I installed it at top of window height-about 7'6" in a 9' ceilinged room. I think the open space above the rail is partly what makes it appealing.
