Hi
I am trying to install laminated flooring on two pie shaped stairs. I was able to stain the rest of the staircase due to the good condition of the wood. However the two pie-shaped stairs are pretty worn out. Some how I need to either put laminated or hard wood flooring down or replace the two pieces of the pie-shaped stairs with new pieces of wood, so I can properly stain them. Does anyone have any suggestions or other options?
Thanks
Tara

Tara,
I would be inclined to pass on the laminated for stairs. The hardwood should work for you. Just make sure any thickness you add doesn't disrupt the rest of the stair tread to riser ratio. That is, don't add a piece of 1" thick wood onto just two stairs as you'll notice it compared to the others. Can you remove any existing tread material on those two stairs?
Also, make patterns out of cardboard before you cut your replacement pieces of wood. Saves headache and waste and you can trim them to fit exactly how you want them and then cut your good material.
Good luck.
Mike
*Thanks for your help Mike. I'll try it this weekend.Tara
*tara, sometimes you get lucky and the pies are assymetrical, and you can just flip them over and get another hundred years out of them. a little stain and finish and you get same color.
*do you mean winder treads? aren't there balusters in the treads? are the winders fitted into the stringers? removal of which takes some degree of skill and knowledge. i would belt sand the worst of the wear down and finish up with a random orbit sander then stain and poly and pray for a close match. another reason why wood should remain natural....see floor problem.
