I have seen mention in differant places a dissatisfaction with drawingd and specs as provides>
“As I have talked with Lead Carpenters around the country the most common complaint is inacurate plans and specs. I think sales staff need to work with the Leads to develope specs and plans that are readable by the field. It is one thing for sales to understand the project and another for the Lead to understand it. So discussion about the specs, imput from the field on changes that can be made, and availablity of sales to answer questions that arise because of the specs are important things to work on.”
What is it thats wrong with plans and spec’s. and what would everyone like to see done to correct it and what is a fair price to pay to get exactly what you want and need. We have already started a company to do nothing but construction documents with or without material takeoff using CAD. Currently working with 5 builders in Georgia and 1 in S. Carolina. We use SoftPlan for drawing and presentation drawing and BuildSoft to set up companies with construction management. As a builder who designed his own homes and coming to the field from the Architecture side when I built I did exactly what I needed to build from and refined it as I wenrt along when relevant to clarity or detailing needed for the level of subs I worked with. We are not interested in doing design work although we would consider plan/design evaluation and suggestions when requested. We have seen drawings with to much and definately those with to little and they come from every direction but are seldom given input from the user which is you the builder. Often times I think the objective is to pay as little as possible for the documents so not enough is there to begin with and you the builder has to pay more, using your time or the time of others-framers on up, so you are really paying more for the drawings in the long run.
What do you think is a fair hourly rate, cost/sf or by the pound(never heard of thhat one) pricing to work togeather to satisfy your needs.
“Plans and specs are probably one of our company’s biggest ongoing challanges. Keeping pace with technology just isn’t enough. Our Leads are screaming for consistency… With four different sales/designers, we all have our own ways of putting the project together, even when we start with the same basic drawing and specification templates.”
We want to do just that! Set the standard and maintain consistency.
Any ideas offered will help us determine how we can best do what you suggest and perhaps even for you. Real interested in all your ideas.
