Have used dura bond quick setting joint compound (20 min.) as a repair for small areas that need plaster repair. Have some large areas right now tho and if it fails it could be significant. Should I put a mesh up first before applying (there is already lathing strips). Any other ideas? Do not want to use 1/4″ sheetrock

We use Durabond for large and small repairs. Anything sheet sized we bring in our plaster sub. Try Durabond 90 or D45 for large repairs.
I would use a mesh, or maybe even a small piece of expanded metal lath. The wood lath was designed for the horsehair coat to tooth into. Then the brown coat bonded to that and lastly the white finish coat.
Assume a two coat system for large repairs, with mesh first.

*Are you using some kind of bonding agent to improve the chances of the plaster staying put? PlasterWeld is one product, but there are others that work as well and are cheaper, so say my plastering friends. My experience fixing large areas in my old house says that it makes an incredible difference; no cracks in 10+ years where I used the stuff, but the places where I did a "quick and dirty" without it are beginning to crack. For larger areas, I have had good luck with expanded metal lath screwed to wood lath or studs to give plaster extra strength.
