a remodel moved an exterior painted stucco wall to an interior wall. need to get a smooth finish on it with minimal depth (no drywall on lath).
Is there a cement product you can put directly over painted stucco or is a metal lath always recommended.
Thanks,
Bob

If you know the manufacturer of the stucco, ask them. It might depend on whether it is a new lightweight stucco with the color all the way through or an old 3 coat system. But I suspect a bonding agent is sufficient to attach plaster.
But why not strip the stucco off and get back to the sheathing? Then you can do anything you want.
what is the best way to strip stucco off block?
this process is indoors now.

Why not float the stucco with setting type joint compound? This will adhere well to the old painted surface if it is sound, and with it you'll be able to match most any texture on adjacent walls.

It depends on how the stucco is attached. You'll need to check with an expert.
its masonary stucco over block.
i'm thinking about attaching mesh to the old stucco then do the usual plaster thing.
interesting input about the setting joint compound. you think that's possible?
Skip the joint compound. Most of what I have seen specifically says NOT for skim coating. With a bonding agent, I imagine you can use actual skim coat (like USG diamond finish) over the stucco. But check with the manufacturer.
I have done this, and setting compound right over the stucco works just fine, no need for mesh. So long as the old stucco and the paint are sound, EZ Sand 90 works well. If there is water present, the answer changes.Bill
The paint is the key, that is what you will be bonding to, if it falls off so will whatever you put on it.

is it stucco or EIFS? Stucco is portland, sand and water. EIFS is something plastic I guess. A bonding agent should allow a cement product to adhere to stucco EIFS who knows?
