I got roped into building a brick paver walkway. . . but found the paver bricks (used, already there) are sized for mortered joints ( 1/4 inch difference between 2x width and length). I remember a while back you could buy plastic grids (or tray) that had the proper spacing for the bricks and joint which you put on the ground before the bricks and set them in. I haven’t seen one though in some time. . .any leads on a source? Seems like it would be nice to keep everything even and would prob. act like a geotextile fabric. . .and would keep the bricks orderly . . .

unless you have modular paving bricks, you can't lay them tight.. as you already know.. forget about the plastic grids and just lay them.. herring bone makes a nice paving pattern if you have to use joints..
you need a good compacted base.. lay them with their joints.. then pack the joints with either sand or stone dust .. whichever you're using..
and just keep this in mind for the next time.. if they're not modular.. don't use them

Yup!
I'm doing this as a big favor for an elderly acquaintance, and the pavers were free from a neighbor, so using modular pavers was my inclination, but it didn't work out that way.
I guess if I did a running bond they would work without joints. . . but the herringbone looks nicer!
