I just had an estimate to replace all the iron pipe water lines in my 50s house. The plumber recommended the iron water lines be replaced with plastic lines (I think he called the plastic pipe PEX?). I thought he would recommend copper pipe as the replacement. Can anyone give me their opinion or recommendation as to the merits of using this plastic tubing (PEX) as replacement for the water supply lines in my house? I understand that the plastic is easy to install and is not susceptible to splitting should it freeze. Thank You, Don M

Use it Use it Use it. Forget cast iron drain lines and forget copper. I have a friend who had to replace all his copper due to pinhole leaks constantly having to be repaired.
I hope it works for years to come.
I just had installed thousands of feet of it in my own home.
The PEX is the right way to go.It far exceeds any of the old types of plastic pipe, and even copper for many purposes

I wouldn't consider anything other than PEX today.
Absolutely PEX. 1. it is safe and much less expensive. 2. you can EASILY work on it yourself. it is like Lego for plumbers. i have this tool ... https://www.amazon.com/Milwaukee-2432-22-12-Volt-Propex-Expansion/dp/B0048EJX7U ..... and you can do everything in seconds, works perfectly. this technology will literally save you thousands of $ for small repairs, or big stuff. and it is fun to do.
