Yesterday I had to go to the store and pick up some grocery items and I saw this guy with a “please help” sign attached to a little cheesey table and a american flag also attached to it. he was there asking people to “please help” Im asking help who? i also went to the bank last week saw some guy standing out in front dressed all in white collecting money for who knows what. I guess there are a lot of scams playing on peoples patriotism as a result of 9/11 and the up coming holidays. I wonder if I can pull a better profit doiing that then working ????

Several years ago I heard of a pan handler in NYC pulling in 50-60K a year. Wonder if he payed taxes?
*Sure, Ron.Capitalizing on fear and emotion worked for Jessie Jackson, OJ, and too many politicians to mention(from BOTH parties), you can do it!!
*When ever a "solicitor" sets up at the local Target, an employee puts a "Just Say No To Solicitors" sign out there by the table. It's private property - can't a store just ask the "solicitor" to move on?
*The best (or actually the worst) charity scam I've ever heard of was a guy soliciting donations for the widow of the unknown soldier. Apparantly he collected something like $20,000 before anyone caught on.
*We lived in So.Cal for a few years in the early 90's. Nearly everyday, coming home from work, at the end of the off ramp from the 91 freeway, I'd see a guy with a "Will work for food" sign. Occasionally he would be holding a 1-2 year old in his arms. He got a lot of people handing him money as they waited for the light to change. I stopped at the 7-11 about 1/2 a block away and happened to ask the store owner about the guy. He shook his head, pointed at the new Volvo parked a little ways away and said, That car belongs to the guy, he lives in Huntington Beach and by my best estimates he takes home $300-500 per day." Apparently there were enough "new" people that passed by him each day that he didn't care what the "regulars" thought. As far as taxes go... I would suspect not.
*Another story is the guy at the Buena Vista street offramp of the 134 who had a cardboard sign that said "Will work for Disney" ;-)-- J.S.
*bobl,I heard that one too! I also heard that his roach infested apartment was $1500/mt. and a space to park his car in was $900/mt. Wonder if that left him enough to weekend in the Hamptons?Thomas
*How 'bout the yahoos with "Will work for food" signs?Every time I see one of those, I ask if they will wash my vehicle for a Mickey Dees, they pretend they didn't hear.Dano
*Will work for internet time
*I walked into my inlaws house to find a "will work for food" guy balancing on a plank in their stairwell, painting. I introduced myself and asked him about his liability/workmans comp insurance. He mumbled something angrily and I told him he was excused. Mom-In-Law popped her cork, so........I had to finish painting that stairwell balancing the same rigging. I may have been in danger but at least my wife's share of the inheritence was safe!Thomas
*Goes right to the top, doesn't it? I hear the American Red Cross isn't passing its money on to the intended recipients.
*Doesn't that suck, Martagon? Sheesh. Of all groups. And I'm still seeing ads on TV for the ~send a dollar to the White House for Afghan kids, and the Red Cross will make sure it gets there. Right.
*Martagon, kai:I felt that way at first, especially when Bernadine Healy resigned in protest ( I have a thing for pretty doctors with principles, I guess).Last evening I softened my criticism a little when I heard the rationale that they believe it will be a long war, and there will be other times when they'll be needed (shudder). There is some logic to that. But I still empathize with people who donated thinking it would help the survivors of victims. Myself, I gave at the office, but not to the Red Cross.Tom
