I’ve got the newer version of the PLS2 with the button for pulsating the laser beam for use with a laser detector. I didn’t think I would ever need to actually use a detector with that particular laser. Yesterday, I had a situation where I wanted to use a dectector with it and got the LD-18 universal detector out of my David White kit thinking it would work with the PLS2. It didn’t.
Does anyone have experience using a standard universal detector with the PLS2 or do you have to buy the one that they supply with the PLS2E kit? I don’t need any more laser detectors if I can use the ones I’ve got.
I have contacted PLS, but haven’t heard anything from them yet.

Greetings Bo,
This post, in response to your question, will bump the thread through the 'recent discussion' listing again.
Perhaps it will catch someone's attention that can help you with advice.
Cheers

Heh rez, thanks for the bump...but I just got a message back from PLS telling me that I am SOL in using any other type of laser detector with the PLS2. They want you to spend another $200 or so for their "exclusive" detector.
I figured someone who knew a lot more about this stuff than me, would have a clever way to use what I've got.
You didn't do good research. I've seen written numerous times about this. Sucks, sorry.
Maybe someone will come along with a solution.

There's no fixin' this one Rez. It's like dialing my cell phone number and expecting yours to ring. Does not compute.View Image
Maybe they can find one on eBay. Maybe someone broke their laser and didn't want to replace it, so are selling the detector by itself.

Is this it?

Yep that's it. I got the impression that he isn't interested in buying any additional equipment but was looking for a way to monkey with the other brand detectors he already has to make them work with the PLS2. That's why I said, "Does not compute".View Image
John, that is the one. It is still listed, but you will see the price climb to near $150 or more before it is sold.
The PLS2 is a great little laser and I bought it never intending to use a detector with it. I own several other lasers with detectors that I would normally use instead of that one.
The problem with almost all of these lasers is that you can't see them outdoors and from time to time I want to pull out that little rascal and use it outdoors for a quick plumb shot or something. It's too bad you have to come up with another couple of hundred $$ to use it outdoors.
I don't know if it's the frequency of pulsation or the color of the light that makes it impossible to pick up with a "universal" detector, but I suppose if I had invented that thing I would be trying to sell a separate detector too!
You're probably right about the final price. But if you want it, it is still worth watching it close just in case the big spenders aren't around.

ya, since I was there just thought to give 'er one more breeze thru.

$200 bucks for just the detector?? I actually just bought a PLS2 kit including the detector, mounting brackets, cases etc yesterday for under $300.

That's quite a deal!! Was it new? Did the guy pull it out from under his trenchcoat??
These things do come down rapidly in price for some reason but I haven't seen one anywhere near that price.
Hmmm, what do they usually sell for? Just checked my receipt and it was $299. They do make an interior only one, but for the price it seemed like I should just get the whole package. I guess I never really checked around for prices much; this one seemed like good quality & did what I wanted it to do. If you want, I could send you their phone #, they do mail order. Let me know.
Mike
When I was looking to buy one, $350 was about the lowest price I found. I think you just got a good deal.
It's just too bad that they had to go out of their way to make sure it didn't work with any other laser detector.
You will find a lot of uses for the PLS2.
Yea, I guess maybe I did get a good deal for once. I am looking forward to finding all kinds of uses for the PLS.

Another contractor baught the new Dewalt line laser, very nice, much nicer than my PLS and it comes in a case, and its much cheaper. I'd like to take a better look before I buy, If I like, no more PLS.
