the oils in it will stain marble which is very soft and absorbant.
Not sure why you can't use it on plastic.

ever seen a "marble" sink w/ spider cracks around the drain? Plumbers putty when they installed the drain.
I just unstalled a cultured marble BR vanity top with a porceline sink. The instructions for the top (which I read for some odd reason) stated that the oil in plumbers putty would etch the counter. I used putty for the drain, as the bowl was porceline, but was cautious about what I touched after working with the stuff until I cleaned my hands.
I have been told that plumbers putty is basically a mix of talcum powder and linseed oil. I understand that the oil can "craze", cause premature drying and cracking, of some plastics.
I saw the episode. The guy is experienced and has evidently done this many times without problems. I guess the oil, linseed or otherwise, won't attack the type used in the enclosure. I think it was fiberglass and polyester but I'm not sure.
Perhaps Wet head will enlighten us.
Stainless plumber's putty, that's what I use. It says you can use it on any surface EXCEPT natural marble. For natural marble, seal with acrylic lacquer first then use the stainless putty. May be that's what he used.
I wonder he just kept calling it plumbers putty.
I am not concerned about the marble, just puttingit on fiberglass - do not know if that is same as plastic.
I wrote mfg - maybe someone whoknows willanswer
I've seen plumber's putty discolor unsanded, bone-colored grout (though not the tile, which was travertine), when packed around a shower fixture. Is that a known problem, and if so what is the recommended alternative?
Where are the plumbers when we need them?
When you said you just wanted to use it on fiberglass, it is actually resins on a fiberglass matrix. You are dealing with a plastic of some sort. Check with the mfg's technical support. They should know.
