What is the best product to use for installing drains in sink basins and faucets to sinks/countertops?
Would there be a problem using silicone for everything? Does silicone last as long as putty? What about putting water into the sink before the silicone around the drain cures?
Here’s what I am doing. Let me know if this is correct:
Plumber’s putty: Stainless steel, cast iron, enameled steel
Silicone: Acrylic, Corian, granite, tile
Thanks,

You have it right as far as what is recomended. We use silicone on everything but stainless steel now. On the less expensive stainless steel kitchen sinks there is often a fair amount of warpage so you have a larger gap to make up. On that plumber putty seems to work better for us. Definately don't want plumbers putty on marblite, tile or fiberglass as it will stain. DanT
plumbers putty will have a reaction to a number of plated surfaces on the faucets as well, especially the higher end stuff. Always check the instructions for the faucet installation, because it can get pretty expensive if you have to replace a high end faucet.
