I am helping a guy finish his house, he is owner building. He was having a lot of trouble planning his plumbing rough. I roughed in three full baths, kitchen sink, washing machine box, water heater, fifty feet of basement drain, all water lines, and hand dug 75′ of trench in red clay.
Yes.. it was permitted by the owner, inspected and passed. My location is near Atlanta Georgia. The work was completed in Less than forty hours. What would he have paid for true plumber and was this too much time?
He seems to think that thirty three hours is too much time.

since i have no concept of time...
i think he owes you $2400.00 and a thank-you note

My plumber would have charged about 4 grand for that, but that would include the finish install as well. Depending on the digging, that would be about a day and a half rough in for a plumber and helper. They could probably do it in a long day if they really got after it. I am not too far from you in Alabama. Edited to add that the price would include all pipe and fittings.

My crews make 30somthin an hour each. If you have a plumber & helper roughing in 13 fixtures & 75' of ditch in a day & 1/2.
Send them up here to Seattle I can get them 40 per hour real quick.“It so happens that everything that is stupid is not unconstitutional.” —Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia
None of the plumbers I use work by the hour anymore. They all bill per fixture. Thats why they move so fast. They are probably making in the area of $150 per hour on new work. Its hard to find a decent plumber to work remodels or repair anymore. I wish I had followed up and gotten my masters license. Journeymen and good helpers are in the price range you are talking about. I dont know any master plumbers that bill out at less than 85 per hour for anythying. Maybe you need to move down here. I am sure it costs less to live in south Alabama than Seattle. It is all non union here though.
plumbill ,you know if you are ever in tacoma and are looking for a plumber to do a remodel give me a call 253 566 9205 jeff

What happens if a new guy shows up at your hall?
need to seperate the rough in as above slab and below slab. On slab on grade I have seen a plumber and helper complete in a eight hour day. above slab rough in, cant help you.
New guy?
New to the local?
We have basically 4 lists outside of specialties
A list----- standard journeyman member of the local.
B list---- standard journeyman member of a local in state , but not ours.
C list----- standard journeyman member of UA , but not from our state.
D list----- are the guys that are trying to become members, & fitters with plumbing licenses.
Specialty calls for med gas license holders, seattle gas fitter card holders, welders, & minority calls.
Pull 2 off the top then you can name call anyone on any list, but you have to hire the two off the top for atleast 6 weeks or layoff the name call when you lay off the two at the top.
You can name call foreman, lead foreman, general foreman, & superintendants with out pulling 2 off the top, but if you get caught making a foreman call & they go to a job as a hand the company will get fined.
Superintendants are not allowed to work with the tools until the bitter end of a job, or in an emergency situation.“It so happens that everything that is stupid is not unconstitutional.” —Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia
Luke,
What's your time worth? I have customers that consulting is $85.00 per hour. I also have buds that we help each other out. No score cards.
For plumbing I figure $500.00 per fixture and $125.00 LF for drain replacement. (spadeable soil)

that's at least 4000 here, and 40 hours for one guy is very reasonable, tell him to show you a plumber's quote, if he doesnt have one then bill him!
IIRC the OP said 33 hours...

Not knowing the actual conditions the time does not seem excessive. This is one of the reasons that I work on contracts only. Debating after the fact usually mean that someone is going to get screwed; most of the time the guy that did the work, I would have charged approx. $2500.00 plus material. Lots of luck.

Thanks for all the reply's! I am reading all post. I think the guy is watching hours not the actual work. I have completed a lot of work for this guy and he has never said a word about price or time. I think I may be screwed this time because it changes the relationship. I think I will get paid.

thats classic, guy stands there and scratches his head for 3 weeks not knowing where to start, hires you and now that its done it looks so simple he's saying to himself "yeah i could've done that in a day it's just a bunch of plastic and glue".i'd gave him the shovel for the trench and he couldv'e saved the 750. i would've charged just for digging the trench in clay.i hate a shovel ,if a trencher can't get in there i'm gone.larry
hand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.
If you had this thing, the trenching part of the job might have gone faster.
