Is it a problem if you have a 1″ hot water supply and continue the return loop in 1″ copper as well?

You're moving a large volume of hot water continuously (assuming it's not a demand system), and wasting a great deal of heat as well as the electricity required to circulate it.
It's going to cost you a lot for the convenience of "instant" hot water.

If you are going to use a recirc system, do it wisely. You only need minimal return, not 1". Use 1/4" soft copper, or better yet pex. If you have not bought your circulator yet get a Grundfos with a timer. You don't need hot water 24 hours a day, but you probably use the shower at the same time every day. Anything else turns your domestic hot water into a radiant heat loop.
I run 1.5" circs, but that's for 350 hotel rooms ;-)
1" is too large even for a 7 bath 2 kitchen house.
1/2" is standard, size & fitting availability dictates that. I ran mine in 3/8" soft copper with the smallest Taco pump on the market.
Small pump = low power consumption.
Small diameter pipe = less surface area to radiate heat loss.
