Question: As a part of a total renovation of an old two bedroom garage, I am renovating a utility area in my on slab, 8″ concrete block
house in south east Pennsylvania. The (current)area I am trying to renovate has no interior wallcovering, just the concrete block. I will be studding out for the finished walls, and insulating.
My question is about the R’Value of the wall and wether or not I can safely put water lines for a new Washer and Bathroom fixtures, in the wall? (This comes about because I wanted to install one of the newer Washer supply and drain boxes). I am being advised to keep it outside the wall, any thoughts?

Dennis - You have good advice, especially considering that it's a utility room and may not be as adequately heated as your living spaces.
However, why not consider framing and insulating the wall as planned, then framing out beyond that again to a height related to the tops of the appliances? Then you can plumb the shutoffs, drain box and one of those new dryer vent pan kits well within the heated area of the room. At the bathroom fixtures, continue up to the ceiling. You'll lose an extra 3-1/2" but gain some peace of mind.
*Jeff, thanks for the idea. I appreciate the response. However, isn't that basically the same thing as putting it in the "first wall", the only difference is the increase in "R" value. If that is true, can I not just work on the "R" value in the "first wall"?dflynn
