Evaluating OSB for Coastal Roofs
After Hurricane Andrew, Florida code advisers ruled OSB sheathing inferior to plywood. Was this judgment too hasty? Evidence suggests that OSB performs well when fastened properly, but the jury is still out on impact resistance.

need a pass hole in OSB????
smack it with a framer.. neat 1 - 1-1/2" hole...
plug cutters work better than spade bits and OSB still breaks off if I get to close to the edge were as ply doesn't...

4... i read your link...
it doesn't address new developments..
1: Advantech is a new breed of OSB.. it doesn't have the problems describved in Fisette's article
2: Coastal codes require blocking at 4' of all roof edges..
in Rhode Island this is waived IF you use 5/8 tongue & groove roof sheathing..
we'll be using nothing but Advantech 5/8 T&G in the future.. this is not addressed in the article..
his conclusion that ply is superior to generic OSB is one i would concur with
What is the price comparison of Advantech versus a good quality 1/2" and/or 5/8" plywood.Personally I like the 5 ply 1/2" but then again, being an electrician not a carpenter, I'm not the one making the call on anything but my own small projects. What are your thoughts on the often seen 3ply 1/" versus 5ply 1/2" versus 5/8". Both in terms of performance and cost.
Advantech generally costs more than plywood.. but in some markets / periods it will be less
we don't use any 3-ply plywood.. our yard won't even stock it..
i like 5 ply 5/8... used a lot for roofs with 24" oc frming.... but , like i said, we'll be using the 5/8 T&G Advantech so we can eliminate edge blocking and clips..
anything to do with subfloor will be Advantech also... it's just not worth our while to fool with other materials that won't lie flat and stay flat, and not swell..

Last three times I compared prices, Advantecc and CDX ply were within twenty cents of each other. I don't bother checking any more. just order Advantec. It is superior anyway

Obviously, you want some marine plywood similar to what they made PT boats out of. It was called Harborite or something like that.
Re: "Obviously, you want"...Actually I don't want anything but an accurate estimation of the relative merits of the options at hand. Strengths, weaknesses and relative costs.
but it's AA5x10x1-1/2" sheets...
he'll have to modify the framing a bit to take the load...
