I like to use a Johnson kit, but hang it in a wall framed in 2x6s ripped to 5 inches.
Haven’t had too much ripping to do so far, because my pockets have all gone into small walls, i.e., not much to frame except for the big surround.
After popping in the Johnson #2000 kit, we sheet the pocket walls with 3/4 plywood or OSB. With framing and sheeting now flushed up and out at 5″ thickness, we are ready for gypboard.
Beyond the use of a standard kit, what do you do to frame pockets?

I read somewhere about using plywood rips screwed to the backside of the drywall between the uprights. I used it on this last house, and it seemed to work to stiffen the whole unit. I don't know if it was FHB or where I read the tip.
I like your idea of using thicker walls. Other than where space is limited, I may like to try it.
