Pocket Door installed @ top of staircase

I have a door in the kitchen, leading to my basement and I would like to replace it with a pocket door. Is this acceptable?
Another fact, when you travel down the stairs from the kitchen, there is a landing after 3 stairs, which has a door leading out of the house. I think that should be sufficient from an egress standpoint.
I live in union county NJ. Any forseeable code violations? My other option is to use a folding door (however not a louvered door). The objective is to limit the amount of footprint the motion of the door takes up. Any feedback is appreciated.

I think you will be fine. The main thing is that you don't want a door swinging out over the stairs - from a functionality standpoint. Even that is not goverened by code, as long as it is not the main egress door for the home.
The only downside I can see is that basement doors should remain closed for safety, but all of the pocket doors that I've seen in all of the homes that I've been in have been open and normally remain open unless there is some compelling reason to close them such as a brief need for privacy.
Hinged doors are a lot easier to keep closed because they're a lot easier to open and close in general. Your habits may be such that you know you'll keep a pocket door closed, but it's something to consider.
Yeah. Serious pain if you open and close them daily. Flip out the little handle. . . bleah.
I know what you mean about the opening and closing. Actually this door will be opened and closed frequently. We are trying to limit foot print and are willing to sacrifice with this option. Otherwise I am going to use a bi fold which I think look can look hideous, plus they limit the opening of the doorway.
It looks like we are moving in the direction of a pocket door. The layout of the house is quite peculiar, but alas it is all we can do.
Thanks again for comments.

Yikes indeed!
I'm planning on installing a pocket or exposed face slider at the top of our stairs to limit noise transmition when I open up a wall later on.Rebuilding my home in Cypress, CA
