Does anyone see any problem with running a framing nailer on 1/4″ hose. A friend of mine is using the flexeel poly hose and it is so light, doesn’t drag around corners like a rubber hose, and lays so nice and flat. I figure one 50′ length would do me fine as I could use my old hoses to get me longer when needed and use the poly for the business end.

Few people understand it. Nobody agrees what it is, how to learn about it, or who's responsible for it. It has never been more important

I use one, I believe is only 1/4", and I love it! I do general remodeling with it and truly enjoy it verses the old heavy rubber ones.

Nailers aren't really high use tools by air tool standards. For a single tool it is fine.

If it sinks your nails your good to go.

BTW flex eel does make 3/8 hose. Have a 50' ,only slightly heavier than the 1/4.
Yes they do. Their longer hoses are either 5/16" or 3/8".

When Imerc was here, I brought out my MAX coil nailer, that I had used all summer on a flexeel 1/4 x 50..doing a cedar shingle roof. We tried these here Oak shakes, no dice, left the nails up half driven..I had a similar problem with OSB on studs at home..The Paslode gun was doing fine,(same hose)..we decided one of two problems was the culprit..1, 1/4" flexell 'starved the gun'
2, the comp I was using was only set @ ,100..(mine is always maxed out at 120)So, either the MAX nneds more air, or higher pressure..I just disconnected that max, and let him sleep on the roof..LOLI really like the eel, 'cept when it gets caught on a splinter.

Sphere,Have you gotten a hole from a splinter? I killed one hose with an AL extension ladder, another with a board and a nail. Hate to throw something down and hear the "SSSSssssss...."

No, not YET..??/ thanx fer the heads up tho..damm thing does get caught on an errant shake enuf to want to use it for an unwelcome scuba buddy..do they really hiss good? hmmm..gotta 'buddy' in mind.

To tell you the truth, I don't remember if they hiss or not. What I do remember is every time I throw some scrap down and forget where the hose, while it's in the air I remember and then expect to hear the protest from my newest victim.

I'll keep that in mind.

You should be able to get a hose repair kit (~$3.00 around me). Its basically a metal coupler. You cut out the section of hose that has the hole, and splice in the metal connector. Has worked pretty good for me.
We've had the biggest problem with holes coming from guys who smoke tossing their butts, and the still lite butt landing on the hose and burning a hole in it.

I would like to tell you a little story about a problem I had with holes in the compressor hose it was two framers. We were doing a hip roof and the compressor was not working quite right. At times it wouldn't kick in so the guys would have to climb down and trip the release valve. Not wanting to do this these two bright lights took a nail and perforated the first five feet of hose closest to the nailer so the air would leak and the compressor would run constantly. I did not figure it out right away, when I did I was just a little peeved. But about the same time one of them took another dumb step and shot himself in the knee with a 3-1/2" spike and after 8 weeks of WCB I did not hire him back. I even went as far as deducting his last check for $50.00 to repair the hose but he took me to labor relations and they said I could not charge him for broken tools. Maybe I should have told them I was fining him for stupidity.
do you know if flexeel makes a non-poly hose? I priced one at amazon for 86 bucks and floyd tool only wanted 29 for theirs. Thats a heck of a price difference. They where both 50' 1/4" .floydtool

The one priced for $86 at amazon is 3/8 ID. the 405004T is for $58, still significantly more that at floyd.
Thanks for the link to floyd tool. I've been paying about $90.00 for a hundred foot 1/4" flexeel hose at my local senco dealer. Even at that price they were worth it over the stiff cheap hoses we had been using.
Kenyon, there is a double compression fitting made for these hoses that doesn't weigh much and is "catch-free". They cost me five bucks each from my repair shop.
Thanks for the info, Ill look into it and see if I can find one around here.
3/8" will suprise and delight.
I have 100' of the 1/4" poly hose and I run framers and anything else off it just fine. I love the stuff, and now with the new magnesium light guns, nailing is easier than ever. The old stuff is like garden hose.
Does anyone see any problem with running a framing nailer on 1/4" hose"
Des,
Remember you can always jack up the line pressure and regulate it at the gun (with a micro sized regulator) the way you do with a spray gun. That guarantees the the PSI's at the gun are dead on.

Imerc.
I don't doubt what you say could happen. It all depends on the regulator and line pressure. I've used what I described on all my guns (framing nailers included) with no problems, but I have to admit the regulator is 3' away at the end of a hose whip. I'm also running 175 PSI line pressure.
Jon
then again most of us don't run our 120#rted tools at 175......

Des, we all have 50 or 100' 1/4" hoses attached to a 100' 3/8" lead. We've also ran 100' 1/4" leads too with no noticeable difference.
I wouldn't drag around a 3/8 hose anymore.
