I am in the process of finishing my basement. Previous owner or builder put paper-backed batts between the studs of exterior wall (daylight basement). Before rocking I would rather just cover the entire wall with poly, over the paper backing, than mess with stapling or somehow securing the paper backing into a reasonably airtight barrier. Is this ok?

Eamgjw: I think what you are asking is whether or not you can put a poly, vapor barrier, over the kraft facing on the insulation. I build in northern Michigan and install an extra vapor barrier in all outside walls and ceilings. In basements I usually put a vapor barrier directly to the concrete or block wall, fur out the walls with 2x4's, install fiberglass between studs and install another poly vapor barrier. I think your on the right track. Dale
*Although kraft paper's value as a vapor barrier is somewhat dubious for many reasons, many inspectors won't allow a double vapor barrier...not that your job is subject to inspection...Still...I'd simply slash the kraft with a utility knife, then install the poly.
