does anyone know why my pool heater explodes when it ignites? It has cracked the casing to the heater.

Maybe some Iraqi insurgents are hiding out there? <G>
I don't know much about pool heaters, but with natgas furnaces, a common reason for an overly energetic lightoff is that the ignitor/pilot is too far away from the burners so too much gas gets released before ignition.
If their is no water flow or too low flow it will boil almost instantly.
What size of heater are we talking about.

If it's going BANG! as it starts up, that's because of delayed ignition, or possibly gas buildup prior to ignition due to a gas leak.
Is this an electronic igniter or standing pilot?
It is an electronic igniter
low intial gas flow will cause that..
that gives the chamber a chance to flood with gas before ignition...

The low initial gas pressure suggestion sounds like a resonable explanation. I have been told that a pressure regulator will solve the problem. Do you agree with this solution or do you have another?
Thank you
JRobinson,
Go to http://www.poolcenter.com ,click on the pool talk tab ,and ask your question in the equipment forum. There's a pool guy named Kyle there that is the best on the Internet for answering pool questions.God knows you can't go to a pool store and get any advice, they're 10 times worse than the big box employees.

low gas pressure...
supply line under sized..
gas valve sticking and slow to open..
defective regulator...
has it always done this...
too large of an orfice..
I think in some cases there is a small gas jet near the igniter that serves as a sort of pilot. If that's not getting gas then the thing won't ignite until the chamber fills with gas from the main burner.
Do you have the right jet (propane or NG?)
