Source control, ventilation, and filtration are the keys to healthy indoor air quality. Dehumidification is important too.

I've never applied the stuff myself (personally hate the look) but I would definitely say rent or buy a sprayer. The previous owners in my house rolled it on and the texture is not even. In fact, the areas where I had to patch up the ceiling look better because I used a 3 inch brush. Of course those were small areas that had to be opened up for wiring.
Don't forget the glitter! I'm partial to gold myself

Aww, the silver, mixed with a tad of chrome, and a teensy pinch of blue makes it look like a stary field of magnolia off-white cottage cheese <g> . . . Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
Tape and finish to at least a level three finish. Smooth! Minor defects.
Prime with PVA drywall primer...I like a second coat of latex.
Texture is available in fine, medium, coarse.....mostly medium is stocked locally.
Mix and let sit several hours before shooting. Over-night is good.
Rent or borrrow gun and compressor. Make sure the compressor will keep up with the guns capacity.
Shoot some trial sequences to see how your mix performs....adjust with water or more powder. Have a wide DW knife on a long handle to scrape away your experiments and sidewall overspray.
Likewise proceed to experiment with your knock down by altering the size of the darby/trowel and the pattern of pull.
When you settle on what you like have one person shoot, one person scrape down walls, one person knock down. After the first complete spray pass, stop and look for "bald areas" and reshoot...viewing from different light angles will reveal spots.
Although you scrape the overshoot from the walls it is important to wipe down the overshoot areas with a wet sponge until the remnants are gone. If you skip this step then later as you paint the walls you will find the scraped areas take on a slightly textured effect.
After the textured areas are completely dried, coat with latex paint...splash on glitter if you wish!
A good steady pace with steady good help makes for a nice job.
Other opinions and experiences bu others may follow.
