I am intending to install a tile countertop for an entertainment center, so I am not concerned about water. I would like to use wood strips in lieu of grout.
I have been told to use thin-set for the setting the tile. I have thought about masking the the thin areas 3/16″ area where the the wood strips will lay. Has anybody done this, I have seen this detail in FW mag. on a floor. Help

Haven't done it. But sounds like it would work. Wood does expand more than tile, so make the fit loose. I wouldn't worry about masking, and would just cut the wood slightly short and set it in the thinset too.

For a countertop where no water is likely use PL Premium for everything. A little dab will do ya! As far as wood expansion is concerened - fowgeddabowdit! You don't have enough wood in total to make any significant effect. Make everything as tight as possible (without clamps) and you will be fine. Any space between the tile and wood "grout" will just get filled in with sheet from dailyu use. porcelain tiles do not have perfectly straight edges either. So tightness matters.
