My son and I are remodeling a 62 year old home on an island in Norwalk Ct.
The porch runs one-half way down the long side of the house. It faces north-northeast and is covered by the second floor structure. We have replaced the decking with 3/4″ exterior plywood and now wish to put down some flooring.
We have available 5/4×6″ red cedar. It is not tongue and groove. Our questions are as follows: Is this a good choice of material? Should we lay the cedar on the plywood or on firring strips on the plywood? Would it be best to paint the deck or give it clear protective coating?

Bill, I wouldn't lay the cedar over the plywood or on furring over the plywood. That semi trapped area between the two would collect wind driven rain, debris, etc and be a moldy mess in a while. What's the centers on the joists?
*Bill: not sure why you installed plywood. What's beneath the deck? How much clearance do you have at doors, etc. Without knowing all the details, it seems to me you might want to separate these materials. Install a rubber or torch down roofing material to the plywood if it slopes, then furr up perpendicular to the house walls and install the cedar level over such. Limit the span to 16" or so. If you have some weather protection from the second floor, you can consider protective coatings rather than paints, but always apply over dry material and figure to re-do each to every other year depending on quality of finishes.
