I know there’s a lot of bright minds here, so I expect what I’m looking for has already been created or considered and would like all your insight. I am seeking something that would allow me to arrive on a job, unfold or such a stand, and have papers and a working desk-like surface, perhaps even a powerstrip for the pencil sharpner, or cup warmer, or some such 😉 Criteria includes being relatively light, and secondarily basic and functional. I’m imagining something l like a large briefcase screwed to a sawhorse with braces… but I expect there’s something at least a little more refined people use, ?
Thanks for your thoughts.

That sounds a lot like something I've seen recently, maybe in JLC or FHB. Contractor's Desk or something, it was called. it folded down, big enough for plans, and with pockets for pens and stuff. It nailed to the wall, and had a piece of plywood stuck in it for rigidity, but it was otherwise cloth.
I'll go looking for it when I get a second.

Here it is:

Looks like the price is coming down; JLC says it's $110, their website lists it at $70.

Yeah, I'd seen this but I was really thinking something more that stood up, rather than hangs, for those jobs where there isn't yet walls, or the walls are finished and you don't want to go poking new holes in them...
It has a places sewn in to put dowel rods to make it freestanding.

There's a pic at that site on the Contact/Dealer section with fold up legs.

Thanks to all, you've anwered my question. I'll likely buy one until I have the chance to make something, too.
What your describing is a good old fashioned military field desk. Part folding card table part desk. A piece of 3/4" MDO 2 side ply and a pair of studs and you can make your own. Sketch you vision then get to buildn'.

That's one of the things a pickup tailgate is good for.
