Thanks again to all who replied to my first post on this. For those who did not see it, I wanted to make a power post tamper. I had an extension welded up on a bit that fits a Hilti impact drill. A small plate 1.5 by 2.5 inches was welded on the bottom. Overall length is about four feet. With the drill set on hammer, I tamped a row of posts today. The hammer action compacts the 3/4 inch road crush like concrete very quickly and without effort. I plan to have a slightly larger plate welded on the business end as it would speed the work and I feel it would still exert enough pressure to do a good job. I think a lot of the compaction comes from the vibrations as much as from the hammering. After this treatment the posts feel like they are set in concrete. Just remember to start tamping in layers from the bottom. Don’t fill the hole and then try to tamp.
