Ladies and gents,
I am seriously considering purchasing the new Powermatic PM 2700 shaper but I can’t find any real motor specs on this thing. Does anyone know who makes the motor on that bad boy, what the duty rating on the motor is and what the actual current draw is going to be? I am looking at either the 3 hp or 5 hp 230 V single phase setup. My local PM rep can only tell me that the 3 HP needs a 30 amp circuit and the 5 hp needs a 40 am circuit. This seem like quite a bit of current for that size motor.
If any of you have that machine or have worked with it, any comments you have would be greatly appreciated. I will be using this in a home shop, but I expect it to last the rest of my life and well into someone else’s.
Thanks
Steve
P.S. I cross posted at Knots. I appologize in advance if this causes any confusion.

Based on the NEC requirements the 3 HP motor draws 17 amps and 5 hp motor 28.
And for wire sizing it is considered a continous load and the wire size needs to be up sized 125%, ie 21.25 amps, and 35 amps.
Now newer motors, if not Tiwense generic, often draw less, but code requires you to use larger number (and if the motor nameplate is larger then use that).
And the breaker can be UPTO 250% of the motor rating or 40 or 70 amp breakers.
But the motor selection and the wiring assumes that the unit is USED. In commercial operation you might have a power feeder and run it loaded 95% of the time for an hour or two.
In a home workshop it is probably only loaded 30% of the time and then the runs are limited to 10's of minutes at a time.
You will see any number of 3 hp TS run on 20 amp circuits in home workshops without any problems, but the same specs hold.

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
Bill,
Thanks for the quick and inciteful reply. I think I now understand the sizing requirements. This helps a bunch.
