Okay Guys, Has any one ever had I+I decking buckle on a covered porch?
We are preparing to apply some on 35×10 porch. We framed so the boards will run perpendicular to the house so as to avoid butts and use all 10′ stuff.
But now we have gotten a call from a customer that we did a smaller porch for (8×12) and their decking has buckled severely. It has only buckled in one spot(almost in the middle)but the expansion has pushed the rim joist nails out of the ledger and the edge is starting to droop. The porch is about one foot above grade and is open on three sides so it seems it should have plenty of ventilation. What really is puzzling us is that this job is almost 3 years old and this is the first trouble its had. We had a very wet summer with no problems so why is this showing up now? The boards were painted after they were in stalled with a quality deck paint. Should we have primed the underside beforehand?
Now I’m having second thoughts about the wisdom, or lack thereof, of having 35 feet of expansion to worry about. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx in advance, Tony
