I am trying to wring as much of the on-site labor out of my planned project, and I think I will try “factory finished” siding shingles, plus all the 1x and 5/4x WRC trim. What has been your experience? I am interested in such things as: semi-transparent stains versus solid two-coat acrylics, touching up to match, cost effectiveness, recommended sources, lumber grades, etc.

IF YOU USE PRE FINISHED SIDING AND TRIM, CHECK MANUFACTORS SPECS BECAUSE SOME OF THEM VOID WARRENTY IF OIL BASED PAINTS OR STAINS. IF YOU ARE LOOKING AT SYNTHETIC SOME OF THE WHITE ONES WILL YELLOW OVER TIME.
My experience with pre-finished Hardie plank siding was that it wasn't worth the extra cost due to the amount of touch up required after handling, cutting ,nailing, caulking etc. it wound up being pretty much almost as much work as just painting the whole house from scratch.
