My friend purchased a premanufactured home. Most of the drywall is 1/2 inch and taped. In the kitchen and bath the drywall seems to be approximately 1/4 inch thick and the joints are covered by a flat strip of wood. The strips of wood don’t cut it and she wants them out. Can I just remove them and mud and tape? Why the 1/4 inch stuff anyway – lighter to transport? Is the 1/4 drywall too light to tape?
Thanks,
Martin

Don't know anything about pre-man homes, or 1/4 drywall. We do use alot of 3/8"....that's the thinnest I've seen around here. We use the 3/8th when the 1/2 won't fit up the turn o' the century stairs. Or down the turn o' the century basement steps! Mud and tape as usual.
Maybe this really is 1/4" and the wood is there for a reason? Jeff
*What you think is dry wall may be cardboard on a cleat like attachment to the studs. The thin strips of wood are there to cover the seams.Dennis
