i don’t work with 6x6pt timbers much, but the one i cut today has me curious. how deep should the treatment penetrate into the wood?
this one is 1/8″ at best. looks wrong! it has a .40 sticker on it.

I have very rarely found any that the chemicals penetrated more than 1" to 1 1/2" deep into the wood on a 6" x 6" (or larger) post. 4" x 4" posts here are soaked all the way through, but not the larger posts.
If you cut a post, coat the end that you cut with a chemical treatment equivelent to the chemical in the wood. You can buy the chemical at most hardware stores.
You can buy a .60 post that will have the chemical deeper into the wood, but they are more expensive, and harder to find. They are used for direct contact with water, but will work wonderfully in a ground contact situation.

*Our lumberyard doesn't carry 4x6 or 6x6 .40 any more for this reason; they only send .60 with pole barn packages, etc. Costs a little more, but you can see why it's worth it.
*went back to the big box where i bought this timber, got little satisfaction. went to the next one up the road, and the commercial desk guy was beside himself. he took one look and went and grabbed another 6x6. he cut into it, and it was treated at least 1 1/2 " deep to 2'' deep. he took the peices i had and gave me a new one. he said he has seen this in the past, usually during the deck building season!! interestingly, both the timbers were from same preserver.
