Hi All,
Just a quick question:
I’m going to be installing 5/4 T&G flooring in our covered outdoor porch. I’m going to prime the back and front of each board. Common sense tells me to not prime the tongue and the groove of each board so as not to alter the tolerances of the flooring coming together. Am I right?
Thanks, Dave

You should probably be using an oil-based primer. I would. Oil won't swell the wood like latex, so there shouldn't be any tolerance issues.
I think not priming the tongues/grooves just leaves an entry point for moisture.
Do you think the BIN Shellac-based project would be OK?
Thanks again!
No, BIN is not a good choice for exterior applications. I've used it for the occasional knot hole, but I wouldn't use it as a general purpose exterior primer.
Zinsser Cover Stain would be a much better choice. I've also used Zinsser High Hide Cover Stain, but I can't tell any significant difference between these 2 oil-based primers.
Prime well all sides, edges and any cuts during install.

Prime all edges. That grove is the one place where water is most likely to be trapped and cause rot long term.
Fir has a lot of resins so a good oil sealer formulated esspecially for firs and cedars is a good idea.
