I am renovating my 2-fam house. I have two meters with a 100am panel coming off of each meter. Today one of the hot legs in one of the panels seems to have went dead. Can any of you help me in diagnosing and solving this problem o’ mine?
Thanks, Pat

the other end is loose in the meter can...
the coupling or split bolt on that leg of the service drop is loose...
that one leg of the SE cable to the can is loose...
the severvice drop is partially dicconected at the pole...

Okay, if I'm reading you right, two meters, two 100A panels. One panel works, the other panel has a leg out. What troubleshooting have you done so far?
There's not a lot of things to go wrong, most likely you have a corrosion problem or wiring that has come loose and making poor contact. Pull the meter that feeds the offending panel, see what the meter socket and meter contacts look like. If water's been getting in, things might look ugly in there.
Otherwise, power coming into the meter socket on both sides? You're limited to the things that can be the culprit, which are 1. Bad feed into meter socket (i.e. damaged/corroded/loose cable), 2. Damaged meter/meter base, 3. damaged meter box lugs, 4. Bad SEC between meter and panel (i.e. damaged/corroded/loose cable), or 5. damaged main panel. By damaged, corrosion the most likely culprit.
This assumes you have no safety disconnects between your meter and 100A panel... Otherwise, factor the disconnect into the equation.

Yup, you're right. Forgot the main breaker itself...

There is no obvious corrosion in the panel itself. However there is some corrosion on the meter, on the locking ring, if I may call it that. I'll try to take a picture and post it tom. In any case, i should be calling the utility, correct? The meter is their responsibilty, no? New homeowner, so please excuse my ignorance.
from the meter out is their problem...
from the meter in is yurs...Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming<!----><!----><!---->

This will vary by the POCO.But in general you supply the riser and weather head or SE cable. And the conduit or SE from the meter to the panel. And if conduit is used then the wire in it.Who supplies the meter socket is probably 50, 50. The POCO supplies the meter and the drop and the connections at the weather head.Because the POCO connections are exposed to the weather they are most likely to go bad. And in general they can be at the other end of the drop. But not in this case as you have a 2nd serice and it is OK.Whenever you lose the power in one leg or lights start dimming and other get bright call the POCO FIRST..

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
Call your power company immediately!
If what IMERC suggets, this could be very dangerous with a loose hot service wire since they are not fused.
Perhaps turn off all the breakers on that side until the power company gets there.

Power Co. will not charge you to come check there side of the meter. You have a good chance of a fire, call ASAP.
I would agree with other posters-Call power co. (Esp. if you are not familiar with electrical.) If meter checks out as OK, it could also be a problem with the feed between the meter and the panel. Check for loose connections, possible main breaker malfunction, or corrosion within the panel.
Be carefull if you are checking these yourself! Watch what you touch, and use caution!
