Hi,
Ran into a minor problem this afternoon when I went to apply a top coat of paint to my bookcase. I’m using white latex paint by Beauty tone.
I purchased a new nap (smooth/semi smooth surfaces). I applied the paint only to discover lots of lint/woozies coming off the nap and onto the painted surface.
I’m thinking it wasn’t such a smart idea to wet the nap first and then squeeze it out before rolling it in the paint. Probably a big mistake. I should have just used painters tape to prepare the nap.. to get rid of the lint from the new nap.
or else it’s a really cheap nap.

The price of cheep roller covers.
Some boys vacuum theirs before dipping in the paint. Others believe the only good ones are those that have been used, washed and properly dried. The rest of us spend the big bucks for the highest priced ones. I'm sure there are more tricks to be told.
I run them through the washer. I also wash them out in the washer.
I also wash car parts in the dishwasher, and cure the paint on the nice clean parts in the oven.

I've dried wood in the microwave.
The trick for us married guys is to do it when the wife goes out, and finish before she gets home.
Oh yeah, and to remember to turn on the exhaust fan. <G>
When I was about 17, the folks went out of town for a couple of weeks, and left me home alone.
They came home three days early, and Mom caught me with a set of pistons, and a pair of cylinder heads in the dish washer, and an intake manifold curing in the oven.
She was really bothered. She just about came unglued two weeks later when Dad ran a brake master cylinder through the dishwasher.
Dad's response was to buy her a new oven and dishwasher, and install the old ones in the shop.
and put the seat down

Hi guys,
My first choice would have been OIL but the fumes are aweful. It's the middle of winter here where I live so I didn't want to freeze out my tool room.
I'll never work with Home Hardware paint again! Pittsburgh paint would have been a better choice.
What does a water based Polyurethane look like over latex paint?
Wanda
Clear water base over latex? I just did that to my bathroom vanity doors dark blue. I just laid a fine layer over the latex painted with a roam roller, it seemed to not effect the color a bit. The sheen changed very little on a raking light but did seem to even the overall sheen out.I would not hesitate to do it again. Last thought I let the latex dry for about a week first before the spray.
Not sure if any one mentioned but priming and a light sanding of the primer can dramaticly improve a finish .
Foam rollers if dropped can be rinsed of crud and they seem less prone to pushing paint under a taped edge even when you try to push the tape edge down as hard and even as possible.

I took a lot of heat for the color choices in that room! It was supposed to be burgundy - but everyone was calling it pink (we painted the cab's before install) until the cabinets went in! That and the blue carpet just freaked everyone out. Once it all came together it looked fine (I thought).View Image"...craftsmanship is first & foremost an expression of the human spirit." - P. Korn

I painted a shed for a woman, I built it all out of rough sawn pine..it was supposed to stay natural..she then says here is the color I want..and gave me a gallon ( one of 6) of 'Wild Plum"
Looked just like your cabs..LOL

I can imagine how a few of those colors would bring out the "what were ya thinkin's" but I think the whole thing togather looks just fine. Kinda like an interior designer fine.

It's been a long time since I've used Pittsburgh so I don't know. Used to be they had some good paints and some very cheap paintsBut SW and Benjamin Mooore are the favorites here.be very carefull about laying the clear coat over what you have. Sometimes that works fine and other times it casts a terrible puke yellow tone onto the finish, so do a test sample first before taking a chance of spoiling your work

One trick is to wrap a new roller cover with masking tape, then pull the tape off along with the lint.
Buying and maintaining the best/most expensive covers is also a good idea.
For a bookcase, I'm using a brush or spray.
If I already have a roller out in that colour, I might roll it on, then back-brush it to get rid of the texture.

Hi guys,
I wiped down the top of the bookcase to get rid of the fuzzies before any paint had time to dry. So I won't have to sand. I was in a bit of a hurry when I went down to the hardware store last night. Should have waited till today. They had such a poor selection of semi-smooth naps. Not a brand I usually buy but it was the only one there that would fit my roller.
I like the texture the nap leaves. And since this is the top of the bookcase I want it to look pleasing to the eye since the bookcase is only 29" high. This is going to be seen. Very visable! It has to be perfect. :) Can't stand looking at brush marks no matter how well you brush on the paint you'll always see brush marks.
Wanda
Good paint and a good brush nearly eliminate brush marks. But it is a matter of taste. I would rather see brush stokes than roller texture.

When you want a smooth, uniform finish on something reasonably small like a bookcase or door use one of the small foam rollers. They come with coarse and fine foam -- pick the finer.
Many years ago I was charged with painting doors and mechanical cabinets in a nuclear power plant. Spraying was prohibitive and brush marks a definate "no go". That left the trusty roller. We tried several kinds, brands, etc. What we finally found is that if we used a high quality 1/4" nap synthetic sleeve and lightly burned it with a cigarette lighter, it left the finish as smooth as glass. There were differences. The paint was a high quality alkyd based paint with superior flow characteristics. What the roller sleeve did not do was leave that lint, fuzzy stuff all over. Be careful if you try this. They can catch on fire. You just move the lighter up and down the sleeve briskly. Don't let the fibers melt or start to actually burn.

Now that that is solved....
You do realize Latex never dries hard enough for books? Sometimes they really stick.

Amen! at the very least, put a fan on them for 48 hrs before even thinking of setting anything down on the shelves.

I am slow to make the transition away from Alkyd Satin Impervo but at $50+ a gallon I'm starting. That said the waterbourne Impervo has pretty good flow characteristics and the $50+ a gallon waterbourne Aura paints are proving to do pretty well. They are much better at supporting weights than the typical Acrylic Latex enamels. That said, I would "stick" with the Alkyd Impervo for books.

Part of the problem is that a lot of books are painted with a latex paint on cloth hardcover - bonds with the latex on a bookshelf. I use a water-based polyurethane over latex for desktops and bookshelves."...craftsmanship is first & foremost an expression of the human spirit." - P. Korn

When I want a high quality paint job, I use a brush, or at least back brush behind the roller. The fuzzies are a problem I agree, but the biggest problem I've had with rollers is many, many tiny bubbles that form as the nap pulls off the work, pop (naturally) and can still be distinguished after the paint has dried.
Brian
I'll say it before Frenchy gets a chance.
Why use latex that takes days to get full cure and never becomes non-blocking, when shellac gives a wonderfully hard and fast-drying finish?
Try Purdy White Dove roller covers.

Home hardware...home of the handyman. I love Home Hardware, i spend alot of my, and my clients money there. However I learned a long time ago that their paint is just not up to professional standards. Your bio doesn't say where in Canada you live but if you have a Glidden, Sherwin Williams, Pittsburgh Paints or some other professional paint store go there. They will set you up with the right paint and accessories for your job.
Have a good day eh
