Don’t know if i should post here or the Tavern. Am having a migraine, so mt typing is not too good (less than usual, even!).
We sent four groups, one a week for four weeks; some people stayed more than one week–some people stayed the full four weeks. I went the third week and by then they had done the following in the house:
Jacked up the joistes, put in new peirs as necessary, and leveled (more or less–much metter than it was).
Patched sub floor and put in all new windows and patched sheathing and put on vinyl siding and insulated.
Put up new drywall throughout (130 sheets)–local church group had removed most drywall and panelling that had been attached right to studs. Replaced some ceiling drywall (but didn’t level ceiling–big problen when putting in new kitchen cabinets!).
Rebuilt stairs to attic so they were less steep (old was about 60 degrees with risers about 11”-12” and treads about 6″).
First and sometimes second coat of mud on drywall. Hadn’t drywalled attic (used for living) or two baths.
Our group (7-10 and then had up to four from other groups from other churches freom time to time (previous two groups had about 20 people) put up drywall in attic and taped and first coated that. We also second and third coated all the other drywall and got three rooms ready for painting (we even primed, though we heard there would be knock-down texture in some rooms (heard after I had final sanded and did on last touch up with mud)).
Cajoled local plumber into installing tub and toilet and then we put in luan subfloor. He spilled purpled glue all over new tub and everything else and didn’t see the big deal. Sort of cleaned it up by folloing with clear glue which etched the tub.
Got cabinets installed in kitchen and luan in kitchen, dining/living room and a bedroom.
Installed jamb extensions and painted all trim. Installed two turbine vents. Installed steps for new back door. (Previous groups had moved closets to provide acces for back door). Also shored up house with beams (second floor (attic) where ownwers had randomly removed load bearing walls.
Last group finished drywalling and mudding baths, put up trim, including crown molding where new drywall didn’t meet previosly textured ceilings. Finished mudding and painted almost all rooms. Also gave up on plumber and installed water heater, shower, lavs and toilets themselves.
Electrician (local guy) finished wiring–he wasn’t too happy that the drywall hangers had nicked his wiring by running the rotao zip inside the boxes!
So, I’m guessing the family can move in as of today. They were going to paint and texture themselves. Don’t know if doors were hung or who hangs them. I think appliances also need to be installed.
I was not happy the day the cabinets arrived and out crew felt it was up to the delivery guys (two guys with a hand truck) to unload the truck and carry everything into our pod. I helped, but everyone else just watched. When it was time to pick up a dozen sheets of drywall at Lowes, I stayed back and did my mudding. I must have repaired twenty spots where people ruined the wet mud. One guy went around sticking his hand in it to see if it were dry, and if it wasn’t expected me to drop everything and fix it.
Anyway, I think we all did a pretty good job and the house is a hundred times better than it was! And it is pretty much at a point where the family of nine can get out of the FEMA trailer and into their house again.
