It appears that the EPA and the Consumer Product Safety Commission may be set to take some action on the arsenic in CCA pressure treated lumber. The first step by the EPA is a proposal to label CCA pressure treated lumber while the Consumer Product agency may restrict the use of CCA treated lumber in playground and similar equipment. I would guess this will be just the first step in a longer battle that will have the treated lumber industry defending its product just a little bit less (and hopefully a bit more ethically) than the tobacco industry has defended cigarettes. Should make for some large campaign contributions but probably not the multi-billion dollar court settlements as per the tobacco industry…
