I haven’t time to read all 119 answers to the guy mad about his landscaping, but I’ve had good and bad with contractors, but it’s turned out best when we communicated well, weren’t argumentive, I wasn’t absent, my demands weren’t unrealistic, and I wasn’t cheap. I wrote the check, poured a glass of wine for my wife and me (shared one with him, if he hadn’t left yet), and we got on to other things. Life is too short for that bad stuff.

Are we there yet ?
IMHO, you have the right attitude. As a contractor, I can tell you I'll make sure we go out of our way for customers like you. It's all about respect, as far as I'm concerned. No matter what the situation, you'll catch a lot more bees with honey, rather than sh--, as they say. You're also much more likely to end up with some freebies, that would normally be extras.
Thank you for that. The other post got out of hand with people who didn't know when to stop whining and were way past being able to bow out gracefully.
I guess the bottom line is that management is necessary, each job is subjective, people screw up but they also get on with life.

Yup, you're my kind of customer and I'm your kind of contractor. The one's that ask us nicely while handing us a glass of water are going to get better service and attention than the one's who ask the same question in a confrontational manner. Give us a nice work enviroment and we'll give you the full measure, plus. Give us a situation we want to get away from and that's what we'll do, ASAP. Good post.

Never heard that one but boy is it a good one.
My last comment on this subject:
1) I wasn't mad about anything (it was excavation anyway). The guy is gone & I fixed the mess he left - all water under the bridge. The whole point of the post was in response to another thread which took one bad DIY job & beat up all DIY'ers with it - so I took one bad contract job & did the same in return. Obviously he doesn't represent the entire contracting community - just like the DIY job in the thread didn't represent the whole DIY community. Like I said before, I should have kept my mouth shut (especially since nobody got the point of the thread).
2) I just had an excellent experience with a contractor (concrete guy that I used to work for). I gave him the specs, answered any questions he had & left him alone to do his job & it was fantastic. No hand holding required. The guy was a pro's pro.
