I removed the support wires from a set of pull-down stairs in order to move a piece of furniture into the attic. I’m guessing the unit is as old as the house – 100 years – and has two coil spools attached to a bar that operate the metal strand support wires that facilitate the pull-down action. Problem is, I don’t know how to re-tension or torque the coilsprings. Any Help would be appreciated! LICEC

Use it for fire wood and install one of the high capacity modern units.

Who made it? Memphis Folding Stair might have parts for it, as they're the heir to several stair companies.
Beismeyer (I think that's wrong, but it's something like it) is another option.
Google the manufacturer - This is an extremely insular industry, and all of these guys know each other.

I'm guessing the spool has to be rewound in the up position when there is not much tension on the spring - like a garage door
