i have a 2×4 , 24’x34’camp structure built in 1950. i have jacked it up 3′ put a new block foundation under it and made structural preperations for adding a second story i would like to strip the current asphalt shingles on the roof stand it up and use the 2×6 former roof for the walls of the second floor. as we have done a lot of work on the existing structure we would like to put the second story on as quickly as possible. i am considering panelizing all the second floor walls and building the roof on the ground then lifting it into position when all the prep work is done. has anyone out there undertaken such a task? iif so have you got any helpful advise? thanks westy

How about jacking it up another 5'. That way you can build a new first floor, and leave what you already have as-is, as the upstairs. You wouldn't have to take the roof apart and build a new one.

Or you could lift the old roof off and set it to the side, build your second floor and then put the old roof back on top of the second floor. It wouldn't be the first time that was ever done.
What ever way you diside to do it SHOW us how you did it.

What's the latest on the project?
This is purely a case of alien identity
If speed in blacking in the chalet once you tear off the roof is important, I'd suggest you forget about hand stripping the old roof and just tear it off with an excavator. You can be ready to lay the joists for the second floor before lunch, an have them in place by quittin' time.

As for building the new roof on the ground, I'd only suggest you try that if you have a lot of framing experience and are dead sure you can build it exactly the right size. When your crane operator goes to drop it in place and it doesn't fit, it can really ruin your whole day....
PS--buy a couple of big tarps...just in case....
