Do you have a large house, or is your house well insulated that you would not hear the alarm going off in an room of the house while you are asleep? If so, you should look into a system that interconnects. When one goes off, they all go off.

Currently, I have one alarm on each floor and in the basement stairwell which are all smoke and CO with battery backup hardwired for power and communication. The current brand that I have is BRK. So far they have not gone off since I replaced the batteries and blew them off.

Originally had FireEx hardwired units. Only acted up a couple times during high humidity condition the last 21 yrs. Now that MA requires CO monitoring, I go and buy some Kiddie units to convert home, since both Lowes and HD must have a deal w/ this vendor currently. First box opened does not a pigtail included, yet supposed to be packed w/ one. No sweat, I'll just use old one---WRONG! Different style pins between vendors. Use pigtail from another box and the whole system starts going off. Contact Kiddie and NOW told that alarms are not compatable to other vendors units. Talk about a marketing scam. They at least sent me a replacement pigtail free.
Other insight gained is that the combo smoke/CO alarms they were selling DO not meet state requirements for certain install areas since they are not photoelectric. I guess the clerks, and handout literature on display for consumers " forget" to mention this.
