Question about quake damage in East coast.
One of the frequently shown footages from the East Coast quake damage is of luxury cars crushed by a brick gable end that fell off at Tysons Corner.
It appeared to have fallen off mostly in one large chunk when the bottom course mortar joint gave away.
This led me to wonder;
Did the bricklayers use strapping at several courses to secure the brick veneer to the wall sheeting?
Not sure what the correct term is for this – metal straps laid in the mortar joint with other end screwed/nailed to the sheeting.
Would this be a code requirement for gable end brick veneer or only for walls under the roof?

I doubt those litte brick straps will do much in an earthquake.
Called brick ties and they do acomplish a lot, if used right AND the wall they secure to is framed well
