Hi all
A quick question.
Years ago when I put threaded pipe to gether for compressed air in my shop, I used pipe dope and a set of large wrenches till it didn’t leak.
Is that the same today or is Teflon tape ok for air.
I use the tape for water up to 80 lbs pressure.
I was planning to pipe the shop this winter in my free time.

Every industrial job I've seen uses pipe dope for air; since you've done it before, I would do it again...since I used to sell big compressors, I've seen a lot of them.
I like pipe joint compound for air and gas. Teflon tape for water. DanT
One reason to use pipe dope is that you can't get little pieces which break off and then do nasty things to equipment. That's one of the reasons you use pipe dope and not teflon tape for gas. That said, if you use teflon tape correctly I think it'll work just fine. But the best job is done with pipe dope (IMO).

Thanks All
Pipe dope it is.

check the local plumbing supply or big box. they make two heavier, thicker grades of teflon tape for gas and air lines. one is yellow and the other is pink. i can't remember which is recommended for what, but they're both a lot heavier duty than the everyday white stuff. you might prefer that to the mess of pipe dope. i don't mind the goop but i probably use it mostly because that's what i learned with. also, for air connections, i start wrapping one thread back of the end of the pipe so that no tape gets shredded off inside the line- it's all contained within the joint. with water i usually just start right at the end, but who knows- maybe i shouldn't do it then either.

my vote is for belts and suspenders:
Pipe tape + Pipe dope for all joints (steam, water, gas, air, etc.)
Learned this from an old plumber who hates call-backs.

I also use both (tape and dope) for everything. I use the yellow and pink rolls of thicker teflon tape for most everything. The blue rolls of thin stuff are just so annoying - they shred so easily. Rectorseal #5 is the dope I use - rated for everything* - water, air, fuel gas, ketchup, etc.
*Not sure about oxygen, I've never plumbed a hospital.

I have to agree with what a couple other have said about the thin tape. I only use the pink stuff. I believe the yellow tape is made especially for natural gas. I, too use both tape and dope and have never had a problem.
what color is used for ketchup again?
:o)

Hi all
I never used dope and tape together.
Anything I need to know about how?
I use the white tape for water pipes, and always started back slightly for fear of a piece ending up in a valve.
Also, the supplier is an hour away from me, and haven't seen the heavy colors local.
