Questions from a new member

Stauff | Posted in General Discussion on October 28, 2007 03:24am

Hi All,

I am a new member and am in the process of building what I hope will be our dream home. I have a couple questions about site usage.

I would like to be able to post pictures and request input throughout our project (already under way) and solicit feedback.

1) Would general discussion or construction techniques be the appropriate forum?

2) Would it be more effective to ask questions in the specific forums? (I would think keeping one thread may be more effective)? I expect to have questions covering HVAC, Roofing, Siding, Flashing, Flooring, trimwork, stairs, etc.

As further background, I am acting as the General on the project and have so far contracted one builder to perform site work and rough-in to the point where it is ready to roof. I am fairly handy and plan to do wiring trim and cabinetry myself.

I am using Insulspan SIP’s and have already roughed a garage/workshop in order to test some materials and techniques.

Attached are a couple Pic’s of the project.

My suggestion... do an advanced search on resizing pics.  Someone will probably resize for you but it is less work when done initially.

Advanced  search, top left, look for IRFanview or the like.

    Thanks for posting!

    Welcome!

    1) Based on the topics that you said that you may have questions about, Construction techniques is most likely going to be where you'll want to post.

    2) Questions should be topic-specific, not project-specific. For example, "What kind of step flashing".

Do use the search feature before posting questions.  Many topics have already been covered and the search feature is your best resource for finding those discussions.

Also, filling out your profile may help people to better answer any questions since it provides some background such as where you're building.

Now, this is just my opinion.  Someone will be along shortly to contradict me :-)

Looks like a terrific location Stauff.  Welcome to Breaktime.  How about some profile information?  We're a nosy bunch here.

Live in the solution, not the problem.

Thanks for the quick responses.I get the message on the re-sizing. It looks like my program (ACD 8.0) will do this easily. Future pics will be re-sized.I will likely start a thread on the construction techniques board and put a few more pictures so all can get the context on what we are trying to accomplish.I updated my profile a bit. We are building on a small inland lake of about 800 acres (combined of three joined lakes). We have a 1 acre pie shaped lot in a very quiet neighborhood. Thanks again to all.

Welcome. Is that housewrap on top over bottom?

It is. But believe me, If you see something that doesn't look right please let me know. I'm trying to make sure all aspects of the build are :best practice" and the waterproofing is my greatest concern, particularly since I'm using SIP's, I can't imagine what the result would be If I had rot in my panels.

Cool. You'll find the best part of posting on this forum is the guys that will pick through pictures and look for stuff like that. I'm having a house built and this has been an invaluable resource. An example of what I'm talking about. I posted a picture of my basement where the builder had used a 2x4 instead of a 2x6 he ripped another 2x4 to make up the difference. Someone looked at the picture closely and noticed that they had used bright common nails in the ACQ lumber. That alerted me to look at the sill plates in the basement and garage. Sure enough they hadn't used any galvanized nails on the ACQ anywhere. One thing led to another and they are going to fix it. At first I didn't think it would make a really big difference but I pulled a few nails that had been in there for a month or so and they were showing signs of corrosion already.

As a result of the framer and the builders super telling me I was essentially an idiot for worrying about it. I asked the building inspector and come to find out it is also code. So he tagged all their houses. The lesson they learned? Pizz me off buddy and you'll be driving a lot more nails. :)

Anyway you are in the right place. I would also recommend subscribing to main website. You get access to almost every article written. They have a great search function as well. And several extras including demo videos.

          Hows your housewrap?

After they took the windows, doors, and cornice, back off. Pulled all the housewrap off, and redid it the right way. It was perfect. Looked like a trade show demo.

Brick will be done Monday. It's one of the nicest jobs I have seen. Definitely the nicest job this builder has done in this neighborhood. I guess they heard about my reputation and didn't want to do it twice. LOL

We may be turning a corner. I've learned the hard way to dictate everything in detail to the super even though he's supposed to be the guy in the know.

Some people have a mind for checking such details. The guy that caught mine is in that business. That's the great thing about this place. So many great minds pouring over the info that gets posted is pretty nice.
